The SMS group has been supplying machinery and plants to China for more than 100 years. The first order from the country in our corporate history was for a complete duo-reversing-rolling mill for the Hanyang Iron and Steel Company in Wuhan in 1904. In the 1970s and 1980s, the Chinese steel industry picked up and SMS – especially in the person of SMS CEO Heinrich Weiss – built up relations with all of China’s major metallurgical companies. Heinrich Weiss served as Chairman of the China Working Group of the Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business from 1982 to 1997, and is today considered one of the pioneers who promoted German-Chinese business relations. For the SMS group as a systems supplier and technology partner of the Chinese steel and aluminum industry, the country has for decades been one of the major sales markets. With new production facilities, companies, and today more than 1,000 employees throughout China, SMS has continually expanded its presence in the country.
In March 2014 SMS Meer Engineering China (SMEC) has expanded its workshop capacity in Shanghai, China. Among others, the SMEC team produces components for wire rod and tube plants, forging and finishing equipment, and also offers services including installation, site management as well as the entire portfolio of after sales products. SMEC plans to increase its workforce to 500 employees by adding engineers, service and production specialists.
The product program of SMS Siemag covers the process chain with plants for iron making, the steel, aluminum and non-ferrous metals processing industries from steelmaking technology, continuous casters and rolling mills right through to surface-finishing lines for hot and cold strips including electric and automation as well as appertaining service. On the other hand, SMS Meer produces steelmaking/continuous casting technology for long products, pipe and tube plants, forging technology, copper and aluminum plants as well as closed-die forging plants, ring rolling machines and compatible heat technology. Moreover, both business units offer environmental facilities under the Ecoplants brand.
